Humbled by the Challenges of Post-Pandemic Classrooms

Writer: Ivy WilcherIvy Wilcher

Managing student behavior in post-pandemic classrooms has introduced new complexities, even in environments where trust and rapport have been carefully nurtured. Despite consistent efforts to build a sense of safety and mutual respect, students often struggle to follow classroom norms and school rules. These challenges reflect not just behavioral issues but the lasting impact of disruptions caused by the pandemic on students’ emotional regulation, social skills, and academic habits.

Teenagers, like all individuals, experience highs and lows, and the challenges they face outside of school often manifest in the classroom. Building rapport is more important than ever, providing a foundation for open conversations and helping prevent behavioral escalations. While strong relationships are not a cure-all, they offer a starting point to guide students toward success.

In these moments, the support of administrators and fellow teachers is invaluable. Collaboration provides fresh perspectives and strategies for managing behavior and refining instructional practices. Staying calm and observant during challenging situations allows educators to redirect students gently, reminding them of the norms established as a class community. This approach helps maintain a positive culture where learning can take place.

Post-pandemic classrooms benefit from students taking an active role in developing their own expectations for behavior. When students co-create norms, they feel a sense of ownership and accountability, which can foster greater respect for the learning environment. However, even with this shared foundation, personal struggles often surface in ways that affect both individual and collective learning. Engaging lessons and consistent routines help students remain focused, providing structure in a time of ongoing adjustment.

Navigating these challenges is part of the evolving journey of post-pandemic education. Educators must remain committed to mentorship, focusing on students’ holistic development despite the setbacks that may arise. Reaffirming the “why” behind teaching and learning—both for students and educators—helps everyone stay grounded in purpose.

Though these experiences are humbling, they offer opportunities for growth, patience, and reflection. The commitment to fostering a supportive, engaging, and resilient learning environment remains steadfast, ensuring that every student has the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
